US IP Address

There are various reasons for seeking out a US IP address. You may want to unblock a US-based streaming service, such as Peacock or Netflix US, while abroad, or perhaps you wish to access US-only gaming servers.

Whatever the reason, there are several ways of gaining a US IP address. Some of the most popular methods are:

  • VPN
  • Proxy server
  • Tor network
  • DNS server

However, not all of these methods are equal. While some are free, a premium service will significantly enhance your browsing experience with improved speeds and privacy. That’s why we highly recommend using a VPN.

Therefore, in this article, I will explore all of these methods, but I’ll focus on getting a US IP address with a VPN.

How to get a US IP address

To get a US IP address, I recommend using a VPN, as it’s less hassle and more reliable than other methods. Here’s how you can get a US IP address with a VPN:

  1. Sign up for a VPN. I recommend using NordVPN since it has a large server network and thousands of servers in the US.
  2. After signing up for your VPN service, download it onto the device you want to install it on and use.
  3. Install the VPN on your chosen device.
  4. Connect to a US server – this will change your IP address to the US.
  5. Access your US site like normal and enjoy its content no matter where you are in the world.

If you run into any issues, try restarting your device. If this still doesn’t work, contact your VPN’s customer service team.

I reviewed many different VPN options to find the best providers for getting a US IP address. I will go into great detail about each VPN later, but if you’re in a rush, here’s a quick summary.

Testing methodology: How I chose the best VPNs to get a US IP address

In the process of finding the best VPN for getting a US IP address, I reviewed many different VPN providers. However, not all VPNs are created equally, so some are better suited for the job than others.

For this reason, I had a list of criteria to help determine which VPNs to pick. Here are some of the most important considerations:

  • Strong server network: Servers in the US are essential – the more, the better. This includes servers in the country’s major cities, from the west to the east coast. In addition to having VPN servers in the US, the VPNs on this list have thousands of servers globally. This gives users lots of choice when they’re looking for a suitable VPN while traveling overseas.
  • Speed: Fast connection speeds help users stream and carry out their internet activities without hassle. You want to make sure your viewing experience is never interrupted and ruined by lag.
  • Unblocking ability: One of the most popular uses of VPNs is to unblock geo-restricted services. However, not all VPNs are capable of unblocking these services, as anti-VPN measures are sometimes put in place. This is especially the case with streaming platforms such as Netflix, ESPN, Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, HBO Max, Disney+, Paramount, and Hulu.
  • Strong security features: VPNs protect users in the online environment. masking users’ private information and offering protection on open WiFi networks. All of the VPNs in this list offer advanced security features, including a kill switch, top-level encryption, leak prevention, and a strict no-logs policy.
  • Easy to use: Apps must be easy to navigate and operate, so beginners and experts alike can get the most out of their subscriptions. Plus, customer support should be available 24/7 to assist with any issues you may have.
  • Value for money: Good value for money is also an important factor. Things like multiple simultaneous connections and router apps make a huge difference for users. Money-back guarantees and discounted subscriptions are also a must.

For more information about the criteria I consider, take a look at my full VPN testing process guide.

Other methods of getting a US IP address

Other than a VPN, there are some other options for getting a US IP address. I’ll describe how to do so below:

How to get a US IP address with the Tor browser

The Tor browser is a free browser option that encrypts your traffic multiple times, concealing your IP address and giving you a US IP address.

While it is a secure option for getting a US IP address, it isn’t a fast option. This makes it unsuitable for activities such as gaming and streaming.

How to get a US IP address with a proxy server

Using a proxy server to get a US IP address is another viable option. Proxy servers work similarly to VPNs, routing your traffic through a server.

However, they don’t offer the same security benefits as VPNs. Proxies don’t encrypt your web traffic and often collect user data to monetize their offering and keep the service free. They may also be unable to unblock streaming platforms, such as Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max.

Follow the instructions below to get a US IP address with a proxy server on Windows, macOS, Android, and iPhone:

On Windows

  1. First, go to Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection > Preview Builds.
  2. Now, update your settings with the proxy details of your choice.
  3. Apply the changes and connect.

On Mac

  1. Go to Safari and then, Preferences > Advanced > Change Settings.
  2. Now add your proxy server details.
  3. Apply the changes and then connect.

On Android

  1. Go to Settings> wifi> Your Network > Modify Network > Advanced > Manual.
  2. Add your proxy server settings.
  3. Now, connect to the proxy from System Preferences.

On iPhone

  1. Go to Settings > wifi> Network Information > Configure Proxy > Manual > Manual.
  2. From here, you will have to enter the proxy Hostname and port.
  3. Turn on authentication.
  4. Save and connect.

How to use an American DNS server with a US IP address

It is important to ensure that you use an American DNS server regardless of how you get your US IP address. If a DNS request is sent to a server outside of the US, then your actual location may be leaked. This could mean that you would be unable to access geographically restricted services, among other consequences.

The VPNs reviewed here take care of this automatically. However, some cheaper options do not. If you need to ensure that you are using an American DNS server, I recommend using a service such as OpenNIC. It allows users to choose their DNS server for free, gives several options when it comes to the country, and, of course, includes US DNS servers.

How to get a US IP address FAQs

Is it possible to get an IP address from a specific US city?

Yes, but it will depend on the VPN as to which cities are available. Before you subscribe to a VPN, check to see the locations where you can get an IP address. Most providers offer servers in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Las Vegas, at the very least.

Are VPNs legal?

Yes, VPNs are legal. However, VPNs don’t negate you from consequences if you commit a crime or break the law. Note that you shouldn’t use anything in this article as legal advice.

Do VPNs slow down my internet connection?

While all VPNs slow down your internet connection a little, top-tier VPNs like the providers reviewed here only result in a very small reduction in speed. This allows users to game and stream HD content without any issues.

Why do I need a US IP address?

One of the most common reasons for getting a US IP address is for the purpose of bypassing geographical restrictions. Some streaming services, such as HBO, Netflix, and Disney+, only offer some titles in certain countries. This applies to the US too.

Sports fans may also want to keep in touch with the latest action on ESPN, such as Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), or the National Football League (NFL).

With a US IP address, you can access content that is usually only available in the United States. You can also access other geographically restricted services, such as online banking apps.

How can I check my IP address?

Simply use this IP checker tool. It will tell you what your current IP address is, so you can make sure you’re connected to a US IP address.

Are VPNs safe?

Yes, VPNs are safe. In fact, it is safer to be online with a VPN than without one. VPNs mask your private information from the prying eyes of governments and internet service providers. In addition, they offer protection to users on open WiFi networks.
